Svetla in temna tema: preverite obe

Naredite

  • ena živa barva znamke
  • preprosta, prepoznavna ikona
  • napredek jasno viden
  • preverjeno v temni temi

Izogibajte se

  • belemu ali sivemu ozadju
  • logotipu z drobnim besedilom
  • natrpanim podatkom spredaj

Designing a wallet card that looks right on the lock screen

August 31, 2026

When we think about designing a loyalty card, we picture a pretty image in an app that the customer admires. In reality, your customer sees your card somewhere else most of the time: on their phone's lock screen, small, wedged between messages, the weather and everyone else's notifications. A card in Apple or Google Wallet surfaces when the customer is near your shop, and whenever you send them a note about a stamp or an offer. That's actually your most frequent piece of advertising space — and it's worth designing for.

The good news is you don't need a designer for this. You do need a few simple decisions, made with a small screen in mind rather than a big monitor.

This is how your customer sees the card most often — small, on the lock screen.

Your logo has to read at thumbnail size

On the lock screen, a notification shows a tiny icon of your card — barely thumb-sized. If your logo is full of fine detail, thin type or a tagline, all of that blurs into a smudge. So the rule is simple: the icon should be the most recognisable, most stripped-back part of your brand. For a café that might be the cup or an initial; for a hair salon, a pair of scissors or the name in one bold mark. If your logo has a transparent background, better still — the card's colour shines through and the icon feels part of the pass, not a sticker slapped on top.

The test is easy: open your logo on your phone and shrink it until it's the size of a fingernail. Can you still tell what it is? If yes, it'll work on the lock screen. If not, simplify it until it does.

Background colour: one, vivid, yours

Apple's own pass design guidance (the Human Interface Guidelines) recommends the same thing you see on every good wallet card: pick one solid, vivid background colour rather than white. A white card on a white notification vanishes; a card in your brand colour says whose it is before the customer has read a single word. In the klink. dashboard you choose the card colour and the text colour — and that one decision does more for recognition than anything else. Stick to one main colour; a wallet card is not the place for a rainbow.

Once you've chosen the colour, think about the text on top of it. The contrast has to be strong enough that light letters read on a dark ground, or the reverse — including outdoors in daylight, when a customer is standing at your counter holding the card up to show you.

A wallet card is not a poster. It's a small badge that has to say one thing — whose it is, and how close you are to the reward — in half a second, from the corner of a screen.

Light and dark mode: check both

Phones switch to dark mode at night (and increasingly during the day too), and the lock screen is almost always dark. A card that looks great on a white background in the editor can suddenly be unreadable on a dark lock screen — dark text on a dark ground, a logo that disappears. So after designing, always view the card in both modes: turn on dark mode on your own phone and check that the name and the progress are still clear. It's a two-minute step most people skip — and it's exactly what separates a card that works from one that shows up half-blank for a chunk of your customers.

What belongs on the front

The temptation is to cram everything onto the card: address, phone, opening hours, tagline. But on a small screen, every extra line is noise. The front should show only what the customer cares about in that moment: the shop's name, what the reward is, and how close they are to it. "2 stamps to go until a free coffee" is all they need to see. Everything else — address, hours, programme rules — belongs on the back of the card, where it's available but out of the way.

Do

  • one vivid brand colour
  • a simple, recognisable icon
  • progress shown clearly
  • checked in dark mode

Avoid

  • a white or grey background
  • a logo with tiny lettering
  • cramming details on the front
  • weak text contrast

One more small but important thing: don't "bake" key information into an image. On an Apple Watch and in some notifications the card's images don't render, but the text fields do. So if the reward is written as text rather than drawn into a graphic, the customer sees it everywhere — including on their wrist.

Design you can finish in ten minutes

None of this needs a design program. In the klink. dashboard you upload your logo, pick the card and text colours, set the reward and the number of stamps — and the card is ready, laid out for both Apple and Google Wallet. We'd suggest adding it to your own phone once it's set up and looking at it live, on the lock screen, in both light and dark mode. Those ten minutes are the difference between a card a customer recognises instantly and one that gets lost among ten other notifications.
